by Jason Pargin
What the hell did I just read?
If you told me Jason Pargin wrote John Dies at the End during a 72-hour writing binge of acid dropped on top of a bag of mushrooms chased down by the worm from the bottom of a tequila bottle, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least. This book is absolutely bat-shit crazy insane, and I loved every word of it.
If you like dark, graphic, violent horror mixed with black comedy, time travel, parallel universes, rampant drug usage, and a cast of unlikable characters, then check out John Dies at the End and the sequels this cult classic spawned.
A mysterious new drug shows up in an ‘undisclosed’ small town somewhere in America, and two of the most unlikely and unqualified heroes ever must stumble and fight and hallucinate their way through the havoc that is unleased. I was off kilter the entire ride, never knowing where the story was, where it was going, or how the hell the mess was going to resolve itself. But I have to say by the end, it was quite satisfying.
And **spoiler alert** John DOESN’T die at the end. Or maybe he does, it’s really hard to say. I think I need a good pallet cleanser.
