Sky’s End (Above the Black)

by Marc J Gregson

I didn’t want to like this book, I really didn’t. I’ve always said sci-fi, fantasy, alternate worlds with weird technology is not really my thing. Unless it’s Star Wars, then I’m all in. I love stories about people and the struggle with the human condition. I want to see them at their very best and their absolute worst. But despite the setting and all the things I thought I didn’t like, I loved Sky’s End. It delivered everything I do want in a good story.

First-time author Marc J. Gregson tells a story of a group of teenagers who are selected for an elite unit charged with protecting their world from creatures set to destroy it. Their civilization is based on the idea of a meritocracy. The teens must grapple with the realities of this cutthroat world, where no act is selfless, if they are to rise or fall. The back blurb promises non-stop action, and boy, does Sky’s End deliver. The settings are stunning, the action violent, and the consequences real for this found-family group of teens. It’s a great book that will look amazing on the big screen. I highly recommend it.
